The wheel chews the stump away in chips, cutting down and out. What remains is a chip-filled void, with almost nothing around it disturbed.
An excavator lifts the plate along with the stump. That sounds thorough and on St. George's silt and clay it is usually a mistake — it leaves a crater, wrecks the surrounding lawn, brings up a great deal more heavy soil than anyone expects, and the clay does not settle back evenly afterwards. Going under paving, under a shed base, or along a new fence line means deeper again, and typically means following the surface roots outward too. Price that in at the start rather than discovering it at midday.
Where nothing is going in and the point is simply to lose the trip hazard, shallower will do and costs less. Say so and it gets priced that way.
Stump grinding and removal produces far more chip than the stump appeared to contain, because what comes out is mostly air.
Backfilled and raked level, the chip drops through its first twelve months and generally needs more added. On free-draining ground that is the end of it. On St. George's heavy silt it is worth knowing that the ground around the hole does not drain either, so a hollow that forms as the chip settles will hold water through the winter rather than shedding it.
If you are turfing or planting, the better stump grinding and removal answer here is often to barrow the chip out and bring soil in. It appears as its own item, and on ground like this it justifies itself more often than it would elsewhere.
Do not plant into fresh chip. Breaking down, it locks up the nitrogen around it, and anything set into it sulks for a year or two.
Where the services run. Grinders cut straight through gas, water, hydro, telecoms and irrigation without the slightest resistance, and the machine gives no warning whatever. With the amount of new servicing going into this village, plans are worth checking.
How we get in. These machines come in several sizes. A small machine will track through an ordinary garden gate. The bigger one does not fit, but a wide stump falls to it in a fraction of that time. Gate widths vary a lot between the older streets and the new estates.
Stone, wire or the remains of an old fence in the stump or beside it. Old boundary stumps have frequently swallowed a fence wire, and finding it destroys a set of teeth and ends the visit.
