Tree Trimming Learned On This Kind Of Ground

No classroom teaches tree trimming. This crew picked it up from the trees standing here - sugar maple and white ash rooted in heavy silt, big roadside specimens up on the moraine, orchard stock along Howell Road, and over the last fifteen years an extraordinary quantity of dead ash.

The borer reshaped this trade across the Grand River watershed. It turned up in 2010 and the conservation authority has since cleared more than sixteen thousand ash from land it owns outright. Nobody counted what stood on private ground, and that is now the backlog. A large share of our tree trimming week is now spent taking down trees that can no longer be climbed.

What We Believe About Trees And Tree Trimming

Keeping a tree is nearly always the better outcome, and earlier tree trimming would have saved a good many of the ones we end up taking out.

Regular attention at twenty produces a far cheaper tree at sixty. A quarter of an hour spent on a young tree is the best-value tree trimming anybody sells and hardly anybody buys it.

Topping is not a service we offer at any price. It is damage with an invoice attached.

The thing that kills mature trees around here is not weather. It is building work - roots cut inside the protection zone, machinery parked over the plate, spoil heaped against the trunk. On clay none of that recovers, and the tree looks fine for three summers before it starts to go.

Where tree trimming will no longer do and a tree has to come out, that is a decision rather than a defeat, provided something suitable goes back in its place.

How Our Tree Trimming Crew Works

No tree trimming gets quoted until somebody has stood under the tree. No photographs, no telephone estimates, no crew dispatched to a tree nobody has assessed.

The scope is written before we start: trees, limbs, how much comes off each of them, where the brush and timber end up, and what has been deliberately left out of the figure.

Site set up before the first saw runs, and every tree trimming job cleared before the last van leaves.

And we tell people when a job is not needed. That loses us work occasionally. It is still the right way round.

Tree Trimming Equipment, And Why It Matters Here

Rope and harness do the bulk of the tree trimming, because very little in this village can simply be felled.

A bucket for trees that will not take a climber, and a crane where a tree can be neither climbed nor lowered section by section. Dead ash accounts for most of both.

Ground protection matting, which matters far more on silt than most people realise. A chipper truck driven across a wet lawn here leaves damage that outlives the job that caused it.

Chipper and grinder both travel with us, which is how a tree trimming visit ends with an empty garden instead of a heap awaiting somebody else.
